The world around us is changing rapidly and the recent proliferation of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has been remarkable in its unprecedented pace and integration into digital tools. According to Common Sense Media, “Artificial intelligence is predicted to be the largest disruptive change we will experience in our lifetimes - even more significant than the internet.” Consequently, it has proven imperative that we develop and pilot an AI Literacy program for faculty and students alike.
More than ever students cannot go online or on social media without encountering AI-generated content, even if it is not always recognized as such. Thus, we have opted to pilot an AI Literacy program with our eighth graders as part of our ongoing efforts to prepare them for high school and the complex world they are growing up in. Topics will introduce students to data privacy and security, biases, hallucinations, ethics and originality.
We will continue to communicate on this front in the weeks ahead. But we also encourage you to continue the conversations at home and have your children share their learning and questions with you. Here are some resources to assist you in your learning journey.
