Tips and Tricks

Where do I start?

  • Start with one of the many books available, browse through the titles and look in the indexes for your topic.
  • As you are reading, keep track of keywords that you can search for in your next sources.
  • Next - go to the databases, they have your most accurate information!
    • even basic searches will start you off right, use the keywords you have found
    • look at filters for specific type of information
    • look for "search within" box to narrow your results
  • Searching the websites
    • look for the search box and type in your topic or keywords
    • scroll through the results, looking at the titles
    • follow any links that might have additional information
  • Look at the "Topic Specific Tab" on the LibGuide for links that direct you to other resources. 
  • Try to vary your information sources, you should use a minimum of 4 sources!

Organizational tips

  • Remember to keep your sources straight! Make sure your information is linked to your source!
  • Create your Citations as you find information and label each source (A,B,C,D, etc). Make sure you know if it is from a Book, a Website, or a Database.
  • Use one note-card per fact, make sure to label which source you are taking notes from!
  • A source may have only part of the information you are looking for! Try several different sources to get varied ideas.
